My Print Making Process
For my large format photography I use a tripod-mounted 4×5 field camera along with the zone system of exposure and film development. The equipment adds an additional 28 pounds of gear to a backpack. The sheet film negatives that produced the images on this website span a period of over three decades and were all made with a 4×5 view camera. Each print is hand-printed from the original 4×5 inch negative exclusively by me in my darkroom using gelatin silver fiber base papers.
Each image seems to have its own optimum print size range; still life and intimate subjects tend to look best in smaller print sizes. Conversely, grand landscapes reach their full impact in the larger sizes. Therefore, I’ve chosen to limit most of the still life images to the 11×14 size and smaller. Actual print sizes are about ½ inch smaller in each dimension than indicated in the price table.
All prints are archivally processed, selenium-toned for permanence and enrichment of tones, retouched, and dry mounted and over-matted using 4-ply museum quality 100% white rag board. The mat is signed in pencil below the print and stamped on the back with the print title, negative number, the date the negative was exposed, the date the print was made, the print type, and the chronological print number from the negative. Meticulous care is given to the preparation of every fine print.
As long as I make gelatin silver prints, I do not intend to limit editions of a given image. Limited editions certainly make sense for artwork that can be mechanically reproduced in quantities that can reach hundreds or even thousands such as in lithography and digital imaging. However, for hand-printed silver prints in a traditional darkroom, the process itself (as well as the time and energy of the human printer!) greatly limit the quantity of prints of any given image that can and ever will be produced. Print prices will increase with the quantity of prints of a given image sold over time.
